Chashama and Art of Franza, Inc. present Bobby Previte: Diorama, a solo drum set concert performed for one listener at a time at Chashama 266, an empty storefront in midtown Manhattan.

In Previte’s Diorama, each listener enters a small room and sits directly behind the drum set. Unaware of their identity, Previte plays an improvised 10-minute piece for his solo audience member. The strange, heightened intimacy of the interaction and the publicly exposed space create a concert of extremes and oppositions.

TICKETS ARE FREE, but reservations are required. You will first arrive at a waiting area before going to Chashama. Complete information and directions will be given to you when you make your reservation and will also be listed in your confirmation email.

The view west over Bobby and the drums was fantastic with night falling in that deep blue. Hearing just Bobby’s drumming—to be right in the center of it like that—was like having headphones on all over your body.

About half way through my time though, I realized that what we were looking over, was the World Trade site. I had to work hard to re-focus. Maybe if you’re down there a lot, you get used to it—it’s always a ‘before and after’ experience for me. A marker in history. So this concert was too, for me. The adjustment was: Here we are-now. Night’s falling, and here’s this beautiful, singular, experience.

I have such a deep respect for Bobby’s playing and the choices he makes as an artist and musician. I was given the insight up there that everything he was doing, everything that he does when he plays, is a choice: constant, considered, and measured, and I never looked at it that way before. I guess being behind the kit allows that. Thank you for sharing this. I wonder what it was like from your perspective, Bobby?

It was a great experience that I’ll never forget. At one point during the solo my heart started racing with excitement. I’ve been listening to live music over 20 years, I don’t recall that ever happening before. Would love sit in on another session. Thank you for the gift, Bobby.
